Cancer
Cancer is a very common disease and can occur at any age. According to the New York State Department of Health, nearly one in four deaths in the state is due to cancer. There are over one hundred different types of cancer. Most cancers are named after the body part or cell where abnormal growth begins. For example, cancer that originates in the lungs is called lung cancer. The most common cancers found in men, besides skin cancer, are prostate, lung and colon cancer. Breast, lung and colon cancers are the most common cancers found in women. Prevention Many cancer deaths can be prevented. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), research has shown that screening for cervical and colorectal cancers as recommended helps prevent these diseases by finding precancerous lesions so they can be treatedd before they become cancerous. The Genesee County Health Department partners with the Cancer Services Program of Genesee and Orleans counties to provide education and free health screenings to eligible people in our community. Many vaccines have shown to help reduce the risk of cancer. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine does help prevent most cervical cancers, some vaginal and vulvar cancers. The hepatitis B vaccine can help reduce the risk of liver cancer. These vaccines, and others, are available at the Genesee County Health Department’s Public Clinics which are held continuously throughout the year. For years, excess weight, lack of physical activity, and an unhealthy diet have been considered by medical experts, second only to tobacco use, as preventable causes of disease and death in the United States. The Genesee County Health Department encourages everyone to take the following steps to help reduce the risk of cancer:
