Mandated Services

Arts & Cultural Affairs Law (Section 57.13 - .17) includes the appointment of government historians and description of their duties. The law states that "each local government historian shall promote the establishment and improvement of programs for the management and preservation of local government records with enduring value for historical or other research ..."

Promoting local history is a service provided by preparing resource guides of the collection, brochures, books, and by presenting programs to various community organizations.

The County has appointed a historian since 1941 and the History Department's Research Library opened in 1977. The department assists area residents and visiting tourists with genealogy, architectural documentation, and historical research. Area students are taught how to utilize local records and are assisted with assignments. The Community in general is enriched by the increase in tourism and our history is preserved for future generations.

In compliance with the Local Government Records Law (Ch. 737, Laws of 1987, section 1) the County has created a solid administrative basis for its Records Management Program. Included in the program is a Local Law (which was adopted in 1988), a designated Records Management Officer, and an appointed Advisory Board. Annual reports have been submitted to the County Legislators since 1988. The County complies with this law and has continued to develop its program with financial assistance from State grants.

By controlling all phases of Records Management from creation to final disposition, our County will be able to reduce paperwork proliferation, have efficient access to requested information, provide documentation of compliance to State and Federal Courts and Agencies, and maintain a historical organizational record.
