ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF NURSING

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The incumbent in this position provides administrative support to the Director of Nursing Service.  Engages in the supervision of professional and non-professional nursing staff.  He/she will exercise independent judgment in areas of responsibility and concern and may act as the Director in his/her absence.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Responsible for tasks within the Nursing Department which may include
     Infection 
Control, Skin Integrity protocol, Rehabilitative Nursing
     program;
Coordinates In-service Programs and Training Plans;
Assigns and performs tasks as needed for Quality Assurance;
Instructs and assists nursing staff on nursing problems and ward
     management and
related activities, including activities related to
     disciplines and training plans
as necessary;
Provides for accurately descriptive records and prepares a variety of
     records and 
reports related to Nursing service;
Assists in the formulation and execution of policies and procedures
     governing the
nursing service;
Promotes and maintains good relationship with residents and their
     relatives and 
friends;
Supervises staff to maintain high standards of professional Nursing
     care;
Attends care plan meetings and family conferences;
Coordinates the service rendered by other departments in the interest
     of effective 
management and resident welfare;
Assists in the evaluation of staff;
Schedules Nursing staff;
Collaborates with medical staff in providing adequate Nursing service;
Acts as Director of Nursing in his/her absence, or as directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, AND:

A.        Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State
           registered 
college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in
           Nursing and three (3) 
years of full-time, paid experience in
           professional nursing, two (2) years
of which shall have been in
           supervisory capacity in such areas as 
rehabilitative or
           geriatric nursing;

OR:

B.        Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State
           registered 
college or university with an Associate Degree in
           Nursing and five (5) 
years of full-time, paid experience in
           professional nursing, two (2) of 
which shall have been in a
           supervisory capacity in such areas as
rehabilitative or geriatric
           nursing;

OR:

C.        Seven (7) years of full-time, paid experience as a Registered
           Professional 
Nurse, three (3) of which shall have been in
           supervisory capacity in such
areas as rehabilitative or geriatric
           nursing.

PART-TIME, PAID EXPERIENCE WILL BE PRO-RATED AS APPROPRIATE.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT: Possession of a valid NYS Registered Professional Nurse license.
