SCHOOL TAX

School Tax Exemption only applies to the Alternative veterans’ exemption - Veterans and their surviving spouses may be eligible for reduction on their School District taxes after applying for the Alternative Tax Exemption by providing that the Veteran in question served during a war-time period or received an Expeditionary medal. Additional deductions may also apply for Combat and Disabled Veterans.

This exemption is only for the ALTERNATIVE TAX exemption veterans or surviving spouse - it is NOT available for COLD WAR veterans'.

This exemption was approved by the NYS Governor in January 2014 and each of the District school boards was given the FINAL approval authority. The decision is left solely upon each of the individual School Boards, not the taxpayers of the each school district.

Once the local school board approves the exemption, the district will work closely with the county, city and town tax assessors in order to apply this benefit for each qualified veteran or surviving spouse.

There is no need to come into the Veterans Service Agency to apply for this exemption if the veteran or surviving spouse is already receiving the Alternative Property Tax exemption.
