your application for each examination.

THE ELIGIBLE LIST ESTABLISHED AS A RESULT OF THIS EXAMINATION WILL BE USED TO FILL VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR IN LIVINGSTON COUNTY OR THOSE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, INCLUDING GENESEE VALLEY BOCES SCHOOL DISTRICT.

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY OR THOSE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, INCLUDING THE GENESEE VALLEY BOCES SCHOOL DISTRICT, UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY FOR AT LEAST FOUR MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST.  PREFERENCE IN APPOINTMENT MAY BE GIVEN TO SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WHO HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE LOCALITY IN WHICH APPOINTMENT IS TO BE MADE.

New York State residence is not required for inclusion of names on the eligible list.  Preference in appointment may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residences of the locality in which appointment is to be made.

An official application form must be filed for each examination.  You are responsible for completing all sections of the application.  Exam number and title must be recorded on the application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND BOCES
Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Either

  1. Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school equivalency diploma, including or supplemented by a course in typing and six months of experience as a telephone switchboard operator or answering a multi-line telephone;  or
  2. Four years of experience involving the operation of a desk top console, switchboard or multi-line telephone supplemented by a course in typing;  or
  3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (1) and (2).

DUTIES:Does routine clerical work involving the operation of a telephone desk console or switchboard.  Does occasional typing assignments as necessary.  Does related work as required.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: The written test will cover knowledge, skills and/or abilities in such areas as:

  1. ALPHABETIZING  - These questions test your ability to file material in alphabetical order.
  2. CLERICAL OPERATIONS WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS  --  These questions test your skills and abilities in clerical operations involving comparing, checking and counting.   The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers. 
  3. USING A DIRECTORY  -- These questions test your ability to keep directory records and to supply accurate information to callers.

NOTICE TO CANDIDATES:   Unless otherwise notified, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand-held, solar or battery operated calculators.  Devices with typewriter keyboards, such as computers; Spell Checkers; Personal Digital Assistant; Address Books; Language translators; Dictionaries; and any similar devices are prohibited.  You may not bring books or other reference materials.

APPLICATION FEE:  A fee of $10.00 is required for each separately numbered examination for which you apply.  The required fee must accompany your application.  Send certified check or money order payable to the Livingston County Personnel Office.Write the examination number on your certified check or money order.  Personal checks cannot be accepted.  Do not send cash.  You are urged to compare your qualifications carefully with the requirements for admission and file only for those examinations for which you are clearly qualified.

APPLICATION WAIVER:  A waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household.  In addition, a waiver of application fees will be allowed if you are determined eligible for Medicaid, or receiving Supplemental Security Income payments, or Public Assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Family assistance or Safety Net Assistance) or a certified Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligible through a State or local social service agency.  All claims for application fee waiver are subject to verification.  If you can verify eligibility for application fee waiver, complete a “Request for Application Fee Waiver and Certification” form and submit it with your application by the close of business on the Application Deadline as listed on the Examination Announcement. Application waiver forms are available at the Livingston County Personnel Office, 6 Court St., Room 206, Geneseo, NY  14454.

Successful candidates will have their names placed on the eligible list in the order of final scores, regardless of the date on which they took the test.  The names of qualified candidates will remain on the eligible list for one year.  Candidates may apply for retests at six month intervals.

NOTE:  In conformance with Section 85-a of the Civil Service Law, children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty shall be entitled to receive an additional ten points in a competitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent has served.  If you are qualified to participate in this examination and are a child of a firefighter or police officer killed in the line of duty in this municipality, please inform this office of this matter when you submit your applications for examination.  A candidate claiming such credit has a minimum of two months from the application deadline to provide the necessary documentation to verify additional credit eligibility.  However, no credit may be added after the eligible list has been established.

You may obtain information and application forms from the Livingston County Government Center, Personnel Room 206, 6 Court St., Geneseo, NY  14454-1043.  Your application must be received in the Personnel Office two weeks prior to the date of the examination.  If we do not receive your application, you must wait until the third Wednesday of the following month.  Applications and exam information can also be downloaded from our website: www.livingstoncounty.us.

A "Guide To Taking the Written Test" for the Entry-Level Clerical Series is available upon request.  Study guides may be obtained at the Livingston County Personnel Office. If you wish to order a guide by mail, send your request with a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Livingston County Government Center, Personnel - #206, 6 Court St., Geneseo, NY 14454-1043.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Falsification of any part of the "Application for Employment" will result in disqualification.
  2. Applicants must answer every question on the application form and make sure that the application is complete in all respects.  Incomplete applications will be disapproved.  All necessary licenses, diplomas and transcripts must be attached to the application when required in the "Minimum Requirements" as listed on the exam announcement.
  3. It is the responsibility of the candidate to notify the Livingston County Civil Service Office of any changes of name and/or address. NO attempt will be made to locate candidates who have moved.

The Livingston County Personnel Office reserves the right to terminate this special recruitment program and re–establish the periodic type of examination.

This written examination is being prepared and rated by the New York State Department of Civil Service in accordance with Section 23-2 of the Civil Service Law.  The provisions of the New York State Civil Service Rules and Regulations dealing with the rating of examinations will apply to this written test.

VETERANS: Additional credits are available to veterans who meet certain established requirements.  Veterans who have not exhausted their credits should make application for their use, if desired.  Forms are available at the Personnel Office and should be completed and submitted, with a copy of your DD214, along with your exam application.
