What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service. The Corporation’s mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. Other Corporation programs include Senior Corps and Learn & Serve America. Throughout the country, Americans of all backgrounds are engaged in service to meet community needs. Genesee County AmeriCorps members bring this dedication and commitment to our area.
Program Basics
Members sign a contract agreeing to perform a specific number of service hours, usually over a one year period. Members earn a modest living allowance while serving and are eligible for an education award grant upon successful completion of the service commitment.
Genesee County AmeriCorps offers three levels of participation. Half-time members must complete 900 hours of service, quarter-time members complete 450 hours and minimum-time members complete 300 hours. Most assignments involve a 12 month commitment but the length of the term can be tailored to meet the needs of the member and the host site.
Members are placed at a variety of host sites in the Genesee County area. Assignments vary by site but fall under the general categories of youth development/mentoring, volunteer recruitment and public safety/community outreach.![]() |
