NURSING UNIT COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for maintaining high standards of nursing services in the operation of a clinical unit of the nursing home. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing, requiring the exercise of individual judgment in directing subordinates.  Incumbent must be flexible with hours when necessary to meet staffing requirements.  Does related work, as required and assigned.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises and assists the nursing staff and auxiliary nursing personnel on resident care needs, unit
     operations and related activities;

Communicates with RN Clinical Coordinator to meet patient/resident nursing care needs, carries out
     nursing care plans;

Collaborates with medical staff in providing for the care and treatment of patients/residents;

Provides for accurately descriptive records of the medical treatment, and nursing care, of           
     patients/residents;

Checks physicians’ orders, medication records and charts to insure prompt and accurate execution of orders;

Coordinates the services rendered by other departments, in the bedside care of patients/residents, and the
     administration of medications and treatments on
a unit;

May perform basic patient/resident care, including passing of medications;

Orients new personnel to unit, and oversees participation in related staff-development and in-service training
     programs;

Performs a variety of personnel and unit activities;

Assists in the formulation and execution of policies and procedures;

Acts as Supervising Nurse, in his/her absence, or as directed;

Works as a team member in promoting excellence in nursing standards.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of professional nursing techniques, their relation to medical and surgical practices and skill in their application; good knowledge of geriatric population issues; working knowledge of clinical unit operations, ability to supervise and teach nursing staff in the administration of prescribed therapeutic measures; ability to secure the cooperation of others; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and carry out technical oral and written instructions; mental alertness; thoroughness; cheerfulness; patience; emotional stability; empathetic attitude toward the sick and dying; tact and courtesy; integrity; good judgment.  Proficiency in the use of electronic medical records is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, bend, stoop, pull and push, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to walk, stand for long periods of time and communicate in English.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and position residents as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus and visually observe residents.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, AND EITHER:

A.    Graduation from an accredited college or university, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing AND two (2)
         years of full-time paid work experience as a registered nurse in a long term care setting.

OR:

B.     Graduation from an accredited three-year school of nursing, AND three (3) years full-time paid work
         experience as a registered nurse in a long term care setting.

OR:

C.     Graduation from an accredited two-year nursing program AND four (4) years of full-time paid work
         experience as a registered nurse in a long term care setting.

OR:    

D.     Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing with at least 5 years of full-time paid work
         experience as a licensed practical nurse in a long term care setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:

       
(1)  Possession of a nursing license issued by the State of New York.
