Recording Discharge

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Armed Forces are entitled to record their Discharge Certificates (DD214) at the County Clerk’s Office where they live. There is no charge for recording the Certificates.

Military discharge records have restricted access. The County Clerk’s Office will provide you with a form which will allow your authorized representatives to access this record.

Certified copies of recorded discharges are made, free of charge, for veterans or their immediate families whenever needed. Discharge papers are proof of your military service, and can be used to establish eligibility for a variety of benefits including property tax exemptions and civil service credits.

Once recorded in the County Clerk’s Office, a DD214 is available at any time in the future. A certified copy of a discharge certificate is as legally acceptable as the original.

To record a discharge certificate, bring the original certificate to the County Clerk’s Office. The original will be returned to you. There is no charge.

If you are presenting one of the new electronic signature DD214 it is adviseable to contact: National Personnel Records Center, 1 Archive Drive, St. Louis, Mo 63132.  Ask them to issue  a DD214 with a raised seal so that we can make a certified copy of your discharge when you need one.

Under law, you have the option of keeping the recording of your military discharge sealed and available only to you or an authorized representative.
