Additional License Information

REAL ID and Enhanced Licenses

As of October 2017, we now offer 3 types of licenses/permits/non-driver IDs; the standard state ID, the REAL ID, and the Enhanced ID.
- The state license is the most basic license we offer.  By 2021, this license will not be acceptable as proof to enter military bases and federal buildings and will not be acceptable proof to board a domestic flight.
- The REAL ID allows you to enter military bases and federal buildings and you can use it as ID to board a domestic flight.  It does not allow you to cross the border.  This license is ideal for people who already have a passport for international travel but want to be able to travel domestically with just their license.
- The Enhanced ID allows you to do the same things as the REAL ID, but more.  You can travel to Canada, Mexico, and some other areas by land or by sea.  You cannot board an international flight with an Enhanced ID.  This license is ideal for people who don't need a passport but want to go to Canada and/or Mexico through border crossings.

Additional ID is required to get an Enhanced or REAL ID.  People typically need their birth certificate (or US Passport,) their Social Security card, and two forms or residence proof (unpaid utility bill, credit card statement, bank statement, recently postmarked mail, etc.)  Anyone with any name changes (due to marriage, divorce, etc.) will need to bring proof of EACH name change.

Conditional License

If you have been convicted of an alcohol related offense, you may be eligible for a conditional license. You are required to sign up for the Drinker Driver Program (DDP) at the time a conditional license is issued. To check eligibility, please bring proof of identity and any correspondence given to you by the court or the State Department of Motor Vehicles to the Genesee County Motor Vehicle Office. Our enforcement specialist will review your record and advise you accordingly. Enforcement hours are Monday thru Friday 8:30 am to 11:30 am. The fee for a conditional license is $75.00. The fee for the Drunk Driver Program (DDP) is no more than $225.00 and is due at the start of classes.

Restricted License

If your license is suspended or revoked for a non-alcohol related offense, you may be eligible for a restricted license. To check eligibility, please bring proof of identity and related correspondence issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles to the Genesee County Motor Vehicle Office. Our enforcement specialist will review your record and advise you accordingly. Enforcement hours are Monday thru Friday 8:30 am to 11:30 am. The fee for a restricted license is $87.50.

Delinquent Child Support Suspension

If a parent has a court order to pay child support and it is determined that no payment has been made for 4 months, a warning notice is sent from the Department of Social Services (DSS). This notice informs the parent to contact their DSS Support Collections Unit. If the parent does not respond within 45 days, DSS will notify the Department of Motor Vehicles to have the parent's driver's license suspended. The Department of Motor Vehicles will then issue a notice of license suspension. This suspension will remain in effect until obligations are satisfied or payment arrangements are made with the DSS Support Collection unit. The phone number for the Genesee County DSS Office of Child Support is 344-2580.
