ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF – CITY OF BATAVIA

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important administrative position involving direct supervision of the activities of police officers according to procedures and policies established by superior officers. The work is performed in accordance with policies and objectives established by an appropriate municipal authority, allowing wide leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in maintaining high standards of performance.  Does related work, as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Responsible for work assignments and supervision of Police Officers and activities of the Police
      Department;
Responsible for the supervision of the activities of the Detective Bureau including raids,
     surveillance and criminal identification;
Formulates department rules and procedures and issuing of general orders to the Police
     Department;
Acts as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies such as the NYS Police and the Genesee
      County Sheriffs Office;
Directs and oversees training of Police Department staff;
Plans and prepares federal and state reports of the activities of the Police Department and assists
     the Police Chief in preparing reports for the City Manager and City Council;
Investigates complaints regarding activities of the Police Department and takes disciplinary action
     when necessary;
Supervises and participates in the investigation of criminal offenses, accidents of a serious nature,
     riots, fires, large assemblies, and other unusual disorders;
Acts as Police Department information officer by dispensing information to the public, citizens and
     community groups related to Police Department matters;
Responsible for fleet and equipment maintenance and departmental purchases;
Acts as the Police Chief in his absence;

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Comprehensive knowledge of modern principles and practices of police work and police administration; thorough knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Code of Criminal Procedure, Vehicle and Traffic Law, and of all local laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to police work; thorough knowledge of scientific methods of crime detection and criminal investigation; demonstrated ability to lead and direct the activities of police officers; ability to deal with the public in a courteous manner; excellent moral character and integrity;.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PROMOTIONAL
    
Four years of permanent, competitive status as a Police Sergeant in the department where the
    
promotion is sought.

OPEN COMPETITIVE
     Four years of full-time, paid experience as a 1st line supervisor in a title equivalent to Police
     Sergeant and successful completion if a course prescribed by Municipal Police Training
     Council.
