Bridge Maintenance Worker

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
:  Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks related to the construction and repair of bridges and approaches thereto.  The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Builds and places forms used in pouring concrete;
Builds and places barriers, at construction sites;
Assists in the mixing, pouring, and finishing of concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials;
Lays and ties reinforcement rods;
Assists in the placement of steel reinforcement beams;
Performs welding tasks related to bridgework, and applies protective coating;
Assists in snow-removal operations, when weather conditions prelude bridge construction or maintenance activities;
Operates a motor vehicle as an adjunct to regular duties;
May be required to perform traffic control duties.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Working knowledge of road and bridge construction and maintenance practices; working knowledge of the various tools and equipment used in bridge construction; working knowledge of bridge and road construction safety policies and procedures; ability to follow written and oral instructions; willingness to work out-of-doors under adverse weather conditions; physical strength and endurance; reliability.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk
or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  One year of experience in road and/or bridge maintenance and construction activities; or, any combination of experience and
training indicating ability to perform assigned duties successfully.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:  Possession and maintenance of an appropriate valid license(s), as required.
