CLIENT SERVICES OUTREACH ASSISTANT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
  Employees in this class disseminate information pertaining to services provided by an agency/department.  Incumbents assess the needs of clientele, evaluate applications for assistance, and either provide direct services or refer to community agencies for provision of services.   The work is carried out under the direct supervision of the department head or his/her designee in accordance with established policies and procedures.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Reads, reviews and evaluates applications for services;
Analyzes information from several sources for the determination of eligibility for available program services or referral to community agencies;
Conducts personal (client) interviews;
Drives to client’s homes as necessary;
Compiles and keeps written records;
Contacts various media for dissemination of public information regarding services.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the geographic area served by the Genesee County Human Service agencies; good knowledge of the programs and services available to various clientele; working knowledge of the characteristics, needs and interests of elderly clientele; ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to read and write, and to communicate effectively in writing and on the phone.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, AND:

Two (2) years full-time, paid experience in examining, investigating or evaluating claims for assistance, veterans or unemployment benefits, insurance or a similar program operating under established criteria for eligibility.

NOTE:  Study in a regionally accredited college or university or one registered by New York State or a business school registered by New York State may be substituted for the experience noted above on a year for year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:  Possession of an appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License.
