CONSERVATION DISTRICT INTERN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This position provides an on-the-job learning experience for college students while performing productive work for the department.  The work is performed under direct supervision of technical or professional employees.  The incumbent will perform related duties as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Assist technicians with collecting natural resource data, surveys, and best management practice implementation; Assist technicians with use of District equipment including, but not limited to, survey  equipment  and hydroseeder; Provide technical consultation with farmers and other private landowners;

Complete natural resource inventories both in the field and office;

Provide conservation education related to the wise use of environmentally conscious practices to protect natural resources;

Assist with outreach efforts related to funding opportunities for implementing conservation measures;

Utilize GIS ArcMap or other software systems to make maps, create geospatial data, or in preparing conservation plans;

Participate in District training opportunities.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Working knowledge of the principles and practices of natural resource conservation; good written and verbal communication skills; ability to carry out written and oral instructions; ability to get along well with others as part of a team and to work independently; computer skills to assist in preparation of informational and educational materials; dependable and in good physical condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, AND EITHER:

A.        Completion of two (2) year of college at a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university, with at least 12 credit hours in natural resource management, environmental studies, agriculture, forestry, or closely related field,

OR:

B.        Completion of the equivalent of one (1) year experience in soil and water conservation, forestry, agriculture, land surveying, engineering, or a closely    related field;

OR:

C.        Any equivalent combination of training or experience as defined by the limits of (A) or (B) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid NYS Driver’s License or be able to demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.  Must pass a federal background check.
