CORONER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
:  Coroners are elected officials, subject to a four year term of office, and serve at the pleasure of the citizenry.  Coroners have all the powers and duties and are subject to all the obligations and liabilities lawfully granted or imposed by applicable rules, regulations, and laws. Coroners investigate unnatural, unwitnessed, and unexpected deaths within the County as prescribed by law.  Coroners act as the death scene investigators for the Medical Examiner.  Perform related duties as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Investigates the death, including the collection of evidence, of persons who die within the county, or whose body is found within the county, which is or appears to be:
     A) A violent death, whether by criminal violence, suicide, or casualty;
     B) A death caused by unlawful act or criminal neglect;
     C) A death occurring in a suspicious, unusual or unexplained manner;
     D) A death caused by suspected criminal abortion;
     E) A death while unattended by a physician, so far as can be discovered, or where no physician able to certify the cause of death as provided in the Public Health Law and in the form as prescribed by the Commissioner of Health can be found;
     F) A death of a person confined to a public institution other than a hospital, nursing home or infirmary;
Arranges for autopsies to be performed;
Prepares and submits all reports required by applicable laws;
Disposes of money and other personal property found on a dead body as prescribed by applicable laws.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of applicable state and local laws and requirements for the investigation of violent, suspicious, unnatural, or unwitnessed deaths which occur in the county; Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of death scene investigations; Ability to prepare required reports clearly and accurately; Conscientiousness and thoroughness; Interest in maintaining a high standard of professional ethics; Good professional judgment; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
