COURT ATTENDANT
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:The duties of this position involve responsibility for maintaining order and security in the Civil, Family and Criminal Courts.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Maintains order in the court room by monitoring behavior, advising people of appropriate behavior and removing those who become disruptive;
Seats jurors in the jury box and assigns lawyers and spectators to appropriate seats;
During jury deliberations, insures their isolation by standing guard and restricting access to the jury room;
Delivers messages to the Judge from the jury and vice versa;
Accompanies jurors to and from meals to observe and prevent any improper behavior relative
to the trial at hand;
Acts as an official court messenger while court is in session;
Maintains simple court records such as attendance of jurors and mileage traveled to the Court.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of court room procedures; ability to maintain order in a court room; ability to deal tactfully with the public; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education.
