CUSTODIAL WORKER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is routine and repetitive manual work calling for the efficient and economical performance of building cleaning tasks.  This class differs from Cleaner primarily in that incumbents in this position may be required to lift and move heavy equipment and supplies, perform the more arduous cleaning duties, and do minor repair and maintenance tasks.  Duties are performed according to a well-established procedure, under direct supervision or according to specific instructions.  Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes and buffs floors, stairs, and halls;
Picks up dirty linen and delivers to laundry or storage room;
Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture, and other equipment;
Washes windows, walls, sinks, and other fixtures;
Polishes furniture and metal fixtures;
Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of trash and rubbish;
Clears snow and ice from walks and driveways;
May mow lawns, trim shrubs, rake leaves and perform a variety of other grounds-
keeping tasks as assigned;
Vacuums and shampoos rugs and carpets;
Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of rooms or buildings;
Replaces light bulbs, soap, towels and cleaning supplies;
Moves supplies and equipment from loading to storage areas;
Makes minor repairs to furniture, plumbing, and electrical fixtures;
Replaces locks, hinges, window panes, etc.;
May be required to check entrances for security purposes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to stand; walk; and use
hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside, but may be required to occasionally work in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience in building cleaning work, including some maintenance experience, or any combination of training and experience indicating the ability to do the job.
