Deputy Sheriff - Sergeant

DEPUTY SHERIFF-SERGEANT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
  Employees in this class supervise and participate in, various law-enforcement activities of the Sheriff's Department, having responsibility for a working shift of a small number of Deputies.  Sergeants are allowed considerable latitude for the exercise of good judgment in making decisions on procedural matters of an unusual or more serious nature than those usually handled by an employee in this class.  Reports directly to the Chief Deputy - Road Patrol.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises a working shift of deputies;
Conducts patrols, observing for violations of the State Vehicle and Traffic Laws and other Laws of New York State;
Conducts investigations of criminal complaints, including interviews to obtain statements, to determine nature and cause of crime;
Prepares information for court or for files;
Investigates accidents, including performing activities normally performed by a Deputy;
Supervises the activities of the jail, including jail checks, and booking or releasing of prisoners;
Supervises the Communications Section Civil Bureau, Court Security and Drug Task Force of the Department;
Prepares and conducts in-service training, as directed by the Sheriff or Undersheriff;
Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in the County;
Appears before the Grand Jury, and at other hearings;
May perform court security duties in various courtroom settings;
Prepares written reports, as required;
Performs other duties as assigned by Sheriff, Undersheriff, Chief Deputy - Road Patrol;
Counsels subordinates and recommends discipline.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of New York State Penal Law, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Vehicle and Traffic Law; good knowledge of first aid methods; skill in the use of firearms and less than lethal weapons; skill in the operation of a motor vehicle; skill in the use of special equipment including radar and alcohol testing equipment; ability to instruct and supervise subordinates in police work; ability to prepare clear, complete, and accurate written reports; ability to be courteous, yet firm, with the public; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to operate computer, including word processing and other software programs;
printer, answering machine, tape recorder, calculator, telephone, copy machine and fax machine and police radio; good powers of observation and memory; good judgment; excellent moral character; physical strength and agility; good mental health.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and must be able to detain and/or restrain an adult using bodily force.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three (3) years of permanent, Competitive status as a Deputy Sheriff in the Genesee County Sheriff's Department.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:  Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s license at the time of appointment, and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position.
