DISTRICT FORESTRY AIDE

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
 This is technical work, involving responsibility for assisting the Soil and Water Conservation District in servicing requests for woodlot management, and inventorying the county's woodland resources.  The employee is expected to assist landowners in making decisions relating to woodlot management.  Work is performed under supervision of the District Technician and/or District Field Office Manager.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assists landowners with marking woodlots for firewood cutting;
Provides information to landowners regarding proper woodlot management.  Assists landowners in determining insect and disease problems;
Makes referrals, where needed or requested, to NYS DEC or private consulting             forester;
Records woodland management practices on conservation plans, and plots work areas on plan maps;        
Contacts landowners who have planted trees, to determine condition of plantation, whether further assistance is needed, reasons for planting, future plans, etc.;
Maintains records of all contracts, including type and extent of assistance provided,  landowner decisions, referrals made, and requests for future assistance;
May occasionally assist District Field Office Staff with survey of conservation practices.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of principles and procedures of proper woodlot management; ability to accurately identify tree species, and to recognize value of each; ability to communicate effectively; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; manual dexterity; mechanical aptitude; accuracy; reliability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education
AND EITHER

  1. One year of college, with courses in forestry and/or resource areas;
    OR:

  2. One (1) year of full-time, paid experience in forestry or related work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License.
