ELECTRICIAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
  This is highly skilled work at the journeyman level involving the responsibility for performing difficult maintenance, repair and installation work on electrical equipment and wiring.  General instructions are given regarding tasks to be done, but an employee in this class has wide leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  Supervision may occasionally be exercised over the work of assistants in the completion of a special project.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Maintain and repair HVAC systems in all buildings and facilities;
Maintain all necessary logs for preventative maintenance on tasks completed;
Initiate and maintain preventative maintenance schedules of equipment and facilities;
Install, maintain and repair traffic signals including complex programming and troubleshooting;
Plan and improve existing and new complex electrical equipment and controls;
May install, repair and maintain computer wiring and network facilities;
May install, repair and maintain phone cabling and facilities;
Maintains municipal lighting systems, and installs new lights, controls, and wiring;
Maintains fire alarm system, installs and repairs fir alarm boxes, and rewires alarm circuits;
Maintains fire alarm system control panel, tests circuits and alarm boxes periodically;
Maintains and repairs electrical wiring, controls and thermostats in public buildings, and in parks and recreation areas;
Makes difficult repairs to electric motors and pumps, control and circuit breaking devices, switches and wiring systems at wastewater and water treatment stations;
Installs a wide variety of electrical equipment and devices and rewires installations;
Periodically inspects all municipal electric wiring and devices and makes suggestions for repairs and improvements;
May be assigned non-electrically related tasks, when lack of availability of electrical work, or other exigency, requires.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of the trade; good knowledge of the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical circuits, equipment, motors and control devices; working knowledge of mechanical and electrical drawings; ability to work from plans, sketches, drawings, detailed and schematic wiring diagrams and specifications; good general mechanical ability; ability to follow moderately complex written and oral instructions; initiative; resourcefulness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Three years of experience as an electrician, at least one of which shall have been at the journeyman level; or any equivalent combination of experience and training indicating abilities to perform the duties of the job.
