Engineering Technician

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
  This is routine technical work involving responsibility for performing field survey work and for drafting plans and making elementary engineering computations.  In addition, an employee in this class inspects work in progress to determine conformity with plans and specifications.  The work is performed under direct supervision of a higher level Engineering Technician, in accordance with established procedures.  Technical supervision may occasionally be exercised over construction employees.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Acts as chief of party on routine civil engineering surveys to establish grades, alignments, drainage areas, curbs and rights of way;
Makes routine office computations in connection with the reduction and plotting of field notes of surveys;
Performs routine drafting work from rough sketches, computations, established grade lines and base maps;
Inspects details of construction projects to insure conformity to specifications, including the use of specified materials;
Prepares written and oral reports of inspections;
Makes drafting and tracings of property maps;
Adjusts property maps to reflect changes in ownership and structures;
Performs a variety of routine computations involving estimates of quantities of materials used by contractors;
Performs a variety of routine clerical work.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of field survey methods and techniques; good knowledge of drafting and mechanical drawing; working knowledge of the use of computers; ability to read maps used in field work; ability to use mathematical, trigometric, and logarithmic tables for making computations; ability to carry out detailed oral and written instructions; ability to communicate and get along with the public; good mechanical aptitude; thoroughness; dependability.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, AND EITHER:

  1. Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours at a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with at least 18 semester credit hours in civil engineering or related courses;
    OR:
  2. Two years of experience involving engineering field survey work, engineering drafting or related work in an engineering office of field force;
    OR:
  3. Any equivalent combination of training and experience indicating the ability to perform the duties of the job.

Possession and maintenance of an appropriate valid license(s), as required.
