Fire Inspector/Zoning Ordinance Compliance Officer

FIRE INSPECTOR-ZONING ORDINANCE COMPLIANCE OFFICER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  The fire inspector will work both in the office and in the field. In the field, inspectors examine public buildings and multifamily residential buildings. In the field a fire inspector will assess and investigate structures where a fire was present or where called in to examine a damaged structure and its components. In the office, the fire inspector will complete various reports, complete scheduling, documentation, filing, and review fire drawing submittals. As a Zoning Ordinance Compliance Officer he/she will prepare and deliver notices of violation based on the information received from the Zoning Enforcement Officer. A Zoning Ordinance Compliance Officer will assist the Zoning Enforcement Officer in all other related duties.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES­:
Inspects premises of Industrial Plants and all commercial applications
     throughout the Town to detect and eliminate fire hazards;
Inspects all multifamily dwellings throughout the Town to ensure life
     safety in accordance with applicable codes;
Inspects fire-extinguishing and fire-protection equipment to ensure
     equipment is operable and prepares reports listing repairs and
     replacements needed;
Investigates unsafe conditions and practices which might cause or
     increase fire hazards;
Report’s findings to Building Inspector with recommendations;
Reviews testing documentation and ensures all paperwork is in
     accordance with NYS requirements;
Reviews plans pertaining to life safety and fire prevention equipment;
Keeps daily logs, including photographs of violations found during
     onsite inspections;
Enforces State and Local regulations;
Presents and explains fire code regulations to architects, contractors,
     attorneys, engineers, developers, fire service personnel, and the
     general public;
Reviews and assists when needed developing fire exit plans;
Reviews acceptance testing of newly installed fire protection
     systems;
Implementing the decisions of the Zoning Officer;
Prepares and issues order and notice of violations;
Works on documentation to support Zoning decisions;
Completes other job related tasks and assignments related to the position.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of Public Safety and Security  equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local and state operations for the protection of people, land and property; Good knowledge of Building and Construction materials, methods and the tools involved in the construction and repairs of structures to ensure safety practices for both life, structure and property. Good knowledge of the principles of Customer Service and principles for providing professional personal services to the residents of the public;

Active listening, critical thinking, decision making, well written communication and verbal communication; Evaluating information to determine compliance; Good knowledge of inspecting structures; Experience performing or working directly with the public;

Experience in completing plan review and public services; Experience with hands on problem solving; Job requires a dependable individual; Job requires a willingness to take on responsibilities and challenges; Job requires accepting criticism and dealing calmly and effectively with high stress situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:  The appointed candidate will be required to complete minimum NYS training for a Fire Inspector as per NYS Law.
