FOOD SERVICE HELPER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
  This is routine manual work performed under immediate supervision involving the serving of food and the cleaning of kitchens, serving areas and food service equipment and utensils.  The work is performed under the supervision of a cook or other superior.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assists in the preparation of vegetables, meats and other main courses;
Makes sandwiches, salads and simple desserts;
Serves food from steam tables in a cafeteria;
Washes pots, pans, dishes and silverware by hand or by machine;
Sweeps, mops and cleans food service and food preparation areas;
Serves as cashier and checker;
May be required to deliver meals to shut-ins.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Working knowledge of the proper methods of preparing and serving food in quantity; working knowledge of proper methods of cleaning cooking utensils, dishes, silverware and glassware; some knowledge of the operation of kitchen equipment; ability to follow simple oral and written directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  None are required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Valid NYS driver's license may be required.
