HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
  This is skilled work involving responsibility for the efficient operation and preventive maintenance of heavy motor equipment.  The work is performed under general supervision according to established plans and procedures, allowing some leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in determining the order and details of assigned tasks.  Supervision may be exercised over a small number of employees in other classifications, such as laborers or motor equipment operators, in the performance of specific projects.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 
Operates a road grader, does rough and fine grading in accordance with grades and specifications laid out by a superior;
Operates bulldozer in the maintenance and operation of sanitary land fill areas in grading and removing trees and stones;
Operates a backhoe, 1 3/4 cu. yd. or larger loader, roller over 8 ton, gravel crusher, self propelled road widener, self propelled asphalt pavers, crane and other designated heavy equipment;
Performs routine maintenance work on related construction and excavation equipment;
Supervises and assists a small group of laborers in loading and unloading trucks, patching streets, clearing and grading land, and in other specific tasks as assigned;
Operates a snow plow and other types of snow removal equipment;
Performs a variety of semi-skilled labor tasks;
May operate trucks and other pieces of equipment as the job requires.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Through knowledge of the operation of all self-propelled motor equipment operated by the department, including, but not limited to,  graders, bulldozers, backhoes, sweepers and trucks; good knowledge of routine preventive maintenance procedures necessary for all equipment operated; working knowledge of the geography of the civil division served by the agency, a high degree of skill in the operation of all types of motor vehicles and heavy equipment; ability to understand and follow moderately difficult oral and written directions, good mechanical aptitude; industry; dependability, sobriety.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of standard grade school and two (2) years of experience in the operation of a motor equipment with a minimum gross weight of 18,000 pounds, at least one year of which shall have involved the operation of heavy construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience indicating the ability to perform the duties of the job.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:  Possession and maintenance of an appropriate valid license(s), as required.
