INFORMATION/COMMUNICATION TECHNICAL SPECIALIST

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This technical position has responsibility for installing, maintaining, and bench testing of all micro computers, peripherals, software, and telecommunication system/s.  Additional responsibility includes individualized instruction in the operation of micro computer hardware, peripherals, software, and telephones.  The work requires the utilization of various monitoring and diagnostic tools.  This work is done under the direct supervision of the ICS Director or designee.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Investigates reported software and hardware problems with micro computers and peripherals;
Identifies operational problems using hardware and software diagnostic tools and procedures, repairs computers, printers, and monitors;
Sends defective parts to an appropriate vendor for replacement or repair and test the returned component before returning to spare parts inventory;
Interfaces all micro computers with their associated peripheral equipment;
Installs and bench tests all new micro computer hardware, software and telephones;
Contacts appropriate vendor/s to communicate problems and request assistance and guidance in correction of the problem;
Assists in replacement of defective phones and calls in trouble reports; assists with ongoing maintenance of telephone system; assists in installation of telecommunication lines;
Assists in the identification, installation, and training of micro computer networks;
Maintains activity log of all hardware, software, and telephone installation and repair;
Responds to user questions;
Trains individual users of micro computer and software systems and software and/or telephone system on both operation and utilization;
Maintains spare parts inventory for computer hardware and telephones;
Assists in the development of requirements for computer purchases and/or telephones.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the principles, practices, and operations relative to micro computer installation, component identification and replacement, use of monitoring and diagnostic tools; working knowledge of all micro computer operating systems used in the County; working knowledge of the maintenance of telephone systems and components; ability to operate a micro computer; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; good initiative and self-motivation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to walk and drive to all County buildings.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education
AND:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate degree in Computer or Micro Computer Repair Technology, Electrical Engineering or related field;
    OR
  2. Two (2) years of full-time paid experience in the installation, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of micro computer hardware, peripherals, and software.

PART-TIME, PAID EXPERIENCE WILL BE PRO-RATED.
