Maintenance Worker

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a broad class covering many types of routine manual work involving responsibility for performing rough or semi-skilled trades or mechanical work, and for assisting skilled workers in a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair work.  General instructions are received regarding routine jobs, while new, unusual or complex assignments are accompanied by detailed instructions.  An employee in this class may be permanently assigned to a specific semi-skilled task and work under general supervision, or may work at a variety of tasks under the immediate supervision of a foreman or other superior.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Cleans, repairs and replaces sanitary and storm sewers, manholes and catch basins, using rodding, bucketing, caulking and air compressor equipment;
Assists in the installation and removal of parking meters, traffic signs, and other installations;
Performs minor maintenance on a variety of small motor-driven machinery;
Assists in the repair and replacement of parking meter mechanism;
Assists a skilled mechanic and individually performs semi-skilled repair and preventive maintenance work on a wide variety of self propelled motor equipment;
Performs semi-skilled work in machinery, carpentry, electrical, or painting operations;
Assists in the installation and repair of wiring systems and electric fixtures and equipment;
Operates machine-producing reflectively-coated traffic and street signs and mounts signs on poles;
Applies hot and cold patches to streets;
Repairs, rebuilds and refinishes recreation equipment;
Rolls, seeds, and maintains parks and recreation areas;
Sets curbing and builds sidewalks;
Repairs windows, doors, floors, walls, and other parts of building;
Plows, shovels, and disposes of snow, and spreads soil and sand on streets and sidewalks;
Serves as general worker performing a variety of other semi-skilled duties.

The above examples of duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of one or more of the mechanical or construction trades; ability to follow oral and written directions; good eye and hand coordination; ability to get along well with others; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity; reliability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience as a laborer in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades or any combination of training and experience indicating the ability to perform the duties of the job.
