Meter Reader

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine work consisting of reading of electrical and/or water meters, and recording those readings.  Meter readers may assist in the computation of customer charges.  Specific instructions are received as to jobs to be performed.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Reads and records reading of electric and water meters;
Connects or disconnects utility service on consumer’s premises;
Reports customer complaints;
Resets demand dials on electric meters, and reseals meters.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Elementary knowledge of the working principles of meters, electrical meters, and methods of power measurement; ability to read simple meters and measuring devices; ability to follow simple oral and written directions; ability to make simple arithmetic calculations; courtesy and tact in dealing with the public; mechanical aptitude; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to read and write numbers in a sequence, in a readable manner, or any equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.
