Motor Equipment Operator

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  Assignments under this title involve the safe and efficient operation of motorized equipment, and the performance of manual duties related to the use of the equipment, including preventative maintenance tasks.  Routine work is performed under general supervision, in accordance with established policies and procedures, while new or unusual assignments will include detailed instructions.  Supervision may be exercised over small numbers of workers in the carrying out of specific assignments at a particular job site.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 
Operates a truck in connection with the hauling and spreading of materials for site development, road or street construction or maintenance, and removal of trash, dirt, snow, and other materials;
Participates in ice and snow control through operation of truck-mounted plows, loaders, blowers, or other tracked or wheeled, self-contained equipment;
Operates a street sweeper, and other related cleaning equipment;
Operates a light tractor with auxiliary attachments, such as a sickle-bar, rotary or flail-type motor, or snow thrower;
Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment;
May, in the absence of a crew-chief or other supervisor supervise a small group of laborers or other workers in connection with the execution of a particular job assignment;
Performs a variety of simple manual tasks, such as cleaning culverts, picking up litter along streets and highways, raking, grading, and shoveling;
On occasional assignment, may operate bulldozer, grader, power shovel, or other heavy motorized equipment;
Does related tasks, as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the operation of trucks and attached equipment, snow plows and blowers, and other self-propelled motor equipment; working knowledge of preventative maintenance of vehicles; working knowledge of the geography of the Municipality; skill in operation of motor vehicles; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; industry; dependability.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to drive a vehicle, stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to cold, wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Completion of standard grade school, and one year of experience in the operation of some type of motor equipment; OR, any combination of training and experience indicating the ability to do the work.

SPECIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
Possession of a valid NYS Class B CDL License.
