Motor Equipment Operator Trainee

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is the trainee position involving responsibility for learning the duties and tasks and developing the skills of a Motor Equipment Operator.  The employee will learn the safe and efficient operation of motorized equipment, and will perform various manual duties related to the use of this equipment.  This class differs from that of a Motor Equipment Operator by the level and pace of the work assigned, and by the fact that the work is performed under close and continuous supervision.  Persons appointed to these positions are instructed through a combination of work activities, counseling, and skill training, in order to prepare them for full-performance positions.  Appointments to the title may be for a maximum period of one year, during which time employees are assessed for their advancement potential.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Learns to operate a truck in connection with the hauling and spreading of materials for site
     development, road and street construction or maintenance, and removal of trash, dirt,
     snow, and other materials;
Learns to operate truck-mounted plows, loaders, blowers, or other tracked or wheeled,
     self-contained equipment in ice and snow control;
Learns to operate a street sweeper, and other related cleaning equipment;
Learns to operate a light tractor with auxiliary attachments, such as sickle-bar, rotary, or
     flail-type motor, or snow thrower;
Assists in performing minor maintenance tasks on equipment assigned for his/her use;
Performs a variety of simple manual tasks, such as cleaning culverts, picking up litter along
     streets and highways, raking, grading, shoveling;
Does related work, as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to perform basic manual tasks; ability to learn the principles of motor equipment operations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid NYS Class B CDL license.
