Parent Aide

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Working under the direct supervision of a professional or para-professional of the Children Services Unit of Social Services, an employee in this class provides model-instruction and support to parents having deficiencies in areas of child care, parenting, and home-making skills.  In providing these services, the worker draws upon his/her demonstrated, successful personal experiences, as opposed to abilities acquired through formal education.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assists a homemaker in acquiring basic living skills, such as:
How to schedule routine and other events, so as to insure meeting responsibilities in a timely and effective manner;
Household management skills, such as budgeting, food-preparation, and housekeeping;
Assists a homemaker in dealing effectively with various social institutions, such as Social Services, Social Security, public health clinics, etc.;
Participates as a member of the Child Abuse and Protection Unit, for goal planning, information sharing, and program monitoring purpose;
May be assigned to work cooperatively with and provide assistance to an Adult Services Aide, if appropriate.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of basic living skills for parenting; ability to perceive, evaluate, and prioritize the tasks involved in various household activities; ability to manage household funds; ability to develop meaningful and constant interpersonal relationships; integrity; resourcefulness.
