Public Utility Worker - Village of Bergen

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  These duties involve responsibility for maintaining and making repairs to the electrical transmission and distribution system of the Village of Bergen.  When not engaged in electric utility work, the incumbent may be assigned to public works duties such as making street repairs, snow removal, sanding streets and maintenance of parks and recreation fields.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Maintains Village electric system, servicing primary and secondary lines, the signal system, associated equipment and substations including transformers;
Makes minor plant repairs;
Repairs electric lines and installs new services to residences and commercial buildings;
Responds to emergency calls at all hours and makes necessary repairs;
Reads, tests and repairs electric meters;
Participates in the installation and replacement of power poles, guy wires, cross arms, anchors and transformers;
Maintains records of material used or salvaged in repair work;
When not engaged in electric system work, participates in other village work such as street repairs, park maintenance, snow removal, street cleaning and sanding;
Performs maintenance on various motor vehicles such as trucks, rollers, street cleaners and snow plows.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the theory and principles of electricity and electric transmission and distribution systems; good knowledge of principles, practices and safety precautions involved in handling high voltage electric circuits; ability to understand and follow technical instructions; ability to read and understand blueprints, specifications and wiring diagrams; willingness to respond to emergency situations at all hours and to work under all types of weather conditions; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education and two (2) years of full-time, paid experience in construction and/or maintenance of electric distribution lines.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:  Possession of a valid NYS driver's license.
