Public Works Maintenance Worker

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: These duties involve the performance of a variety of tasks in care and upkeep of streets, sidewalks, wastewater and water lines, buildings and grounds, recreation facilities, and other public works facilities.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Public Works, Highway Superintendent, or other such authority.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of laborers and other helpers.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Participates in the construction, repair, maintenance, and cleaning of streets and sidewalks;
May operate a variety of motorized equipment such as trucks, plows, mowers, rollers, and backhoes;
Helps to maintain and repair water and wastewater mains, fire hydrants, and other components of water and wastewater systems;
Helps collect and dispose of refuse;
Performs custodial and grounds keeping duties and helps care for tools and equipment;
Participates in snow removal and ice control activities;
Cuts and trims trees and bushes;
Performs a variety of simple manual tasks such as shoveling, raking, and painting.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, water and wastewater lines, and recreation facilities; ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, at times under adverse weather condition; ability to operate heavy equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; manual dexterity; dependability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One (1) year of experience in general building construction, maintenance work, operation of heavy equipment, or in one of the standard trades, such as carpentry, electrical or plumbing.
