Public Works Superintendant

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Public Works Superintendent has responsibility for the activities of the Public Works Department including the streets and parks.  The work is performed in accordance with the general policies outlined by the Mayor or Village Board.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises and participates in street repairs;
Cleaning and maintaining of parks;
Removal of snow and ice;
Cleaning streets, maintenance of storm system;
Sanding of streets;
Supervises and participates in operation of various types of motor equipment, such as trucks, rollers, scarifiers and snow  plows;
Coordinates the activities of the department with the work of other village departments and other agencies.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of modern street construction and maintenance practices; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; honesty; sobriety; initiative and resourcefulness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, AND EITHER:

  1. Five years of experience in street construction or related construction activities, two years of which shall have been in a responsible supervisory capacity;
    OR:

  2. Any equivalent combination of training and experience indicating the  ability to perform the duties of the job.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT

Eligibility for a Class B license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of application.  Possession of the license required at the time of appointment.
