Recreation Specialist

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves the teaching or conduct of some specialty with considerable latitude as to method.  Plans and conducts programs in arts and crafts, music, drama, dance, nature, social recreation, sports and games, or some other special activity skill.  The position may involve the actual conduct of the activity or the organization and initiation of activity groups and the instruction of recreation leaders.  Teaches and develops skill in specific activities.  Does related tasks, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Plans and conducts programs in specialty areas;
Officiates at sports events;
Organizes and conducts rehearsals;
Instructs and calls square and folk dances;
Produces and directs a play, pageant or operetta;
Teaches the playing of musical instrument;
Organizes and instructs hobby clubs;
Assists in the planning of special events;
Requisitions and controls distribution of supplies and equipment;
Keeps records and makes reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the specialty skill; knowledge of the methods of group organization and instruction used in the specialty activity; ability to develop a good working relationship with groups and individuals; ability to stimulate and maintain interest in the participants; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a formal course of instruction in the specialty field, and at least one year of experience in the conduct of the activity (hobbyist experience may be substituted for a formal course of instruction using two years of hobby experience as being equivalent to one year formal instruction), or any equivalent combination of training and experience indicating the ability to perform the duties of the job.
