School Crossing Guard

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is responsible part-time work calling for the exercise of vigilance teaching and assisting children to cross streets and intersections safely in an assigned post.  Supervision is received from a Police Officer through inspection and reports.  Although the work is performed according to a well-established routine, there is some leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in emergency situations.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Halts traffic and guides children safely across streets;
Instructs children concerning proper places for crossing and necessary precautions to be observed;
Assists children with minor problems incidental to going to and from school;
May direct traffic at assigned post during school crossing hours.

The above examples of duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Some knowledge of first aid methods; good general intelligence; ability to get along well with children; ability to be firm yet courteous with the public; good powers of observation; dependability; willingness to work in adverse weather conditions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  EITHER:

  1. Graduation from high school, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma;
    OR:
  2. Two years of experience in a position requiring good judgment, mental alertness and dependability.
