Senior Airport Attendant

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for servicing and handling aircraft at the County Airport and responding to real or potential emergency situations.  Work is performed adhering to appropriate Federal, State and County laws at the Airport. Supervises subordinate employees.  The work is performed under the general supervision of either the Airport Manager or Highway Superintendent or his/her designee.  May be on 24 hour call.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 
Prepares airport for daily operations and use; checks radio equipment for working condition, checks runways for condition and debris; closes operation at the end of the day: checks secureness of aircraft and locks buildings;
Schedules shifts for assigned personnel ensuring adequate coverage for fueling operations;
Ensures that work assigned or completed adheres instructions, guidelines and schedules;
Oversees and conducts regular inspections of airfield runways, taxiways, lighting, security, tenants leased areas, public areas of roadways, parking lots and grounds;
Maintains liaison with airport tenants, aeronautical users, FAA, and other county departments involved with the airport;
Initiates corrective action when conflicts with users develop;
Prepares and maintains all required reports relating to field conditions, equipment status;
Maintains log of all aircraft based at airport;
Performs credit card and cash transactions.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation and service requirements of aircraft in use at the airport; good knowledge of airport rules and regulations; good knowledge of take-off and landing procedures; good knowledge of aircraft fire crash rescue equipment and procedures; ability to understand moderately complex written and oral directions;  ability to plan and supervise work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public; ability to handle public relations problems courteously and tactfully; dependability; initiative; good judgment; resourcefulness.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handles, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, knell, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation of high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education and six months of experience in the operating and fueling of heavy or motor equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:  Successfully complete and pass a certified FAR 139 fueling safety course within six months of hire.
