DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Working under general supervision, this employee engages in, and supervises other employees engaged in the performance of activities relating to the development, maintenance, and utilization of grounds for esthetic, recreational, and/or athletic purposes. During periods of inclement weather, this employee may be assigned to other duties of a general maintenance or cleaning nature. Does related work, as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs and supervises such activities as:
Seeding, fertilizing, mowing, pruning, and planting tasks relating to shrubbery, trees, and lawns;
Maintains parking areas;
Assists in the development of new athletic areas;
Keeps grounds free of debris;
Performs snow and ice removal activities;
Plans work schedules and prioritizes tasks;
Trains new employees;
Makes basic report to Supervisor;
Performs minor maintenance on grounds equipment.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of grounds keeping and grounds maintenance practices and techniques; working knowledge of supervisory practices; ability to plan work and set priorities for tasks; ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with other workers; ability to operate a variety of power equipment used in the maintenance of lawns, shrubs and grounds; ability to perform routine manual tasks; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education and five years of full-time, paid experience in grounds maintenance.
OR: - Any equivalent combination of training or experience indicating ability to perform the duties of the job.
