Senior Water and Wastewater Maintenance Worker

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Performs a wide variety of skilled work for the maintenance and installation of water and wastewater equipment.  This class differs from that of the Water & Wastewater Maintenance Worker in that the incumbents work under general supervision only, with wide latitude being given for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of general assignments.  Supervision and scheduling may be exercised over subordinate personnel.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assigns and performs installation and repairs to water distribution system;
Assigns and performs repairs to pumps, motors, air compressors, controls, grit and
     screening equipment and a variety of other water and wastewater equipment;
Keeps monthly/yearly logs on tasks completed;
Performs miscellaneous electrical repairs and installation;
Plans and improves existing and new complex electrical equipment and controls;
Supervises water and wastewater maintenance workers and laborers;
Takes command of the water distribution and facilities maintenance section in the absence
     of a supervisor:
Initiates and maintains preventative maintenance schedules of equipment and facilities;
Operates equipment including backhoes, trucks, and loaders in the course of performing tasks;
May perform a variety of Building Maintenance tasks including electrical and plumbing.

Additional assignments for City employees;
Maintain and repair heating and air-conditioning units and boilers in all City buildings;
Maintain and repair City owned street lights, including installation of new equipment;
Maintain and repair traffic signals, including programming and trouble shootings;
Performs repair and maintenance of City Fire Alarm System including installation.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of practices, terminology, and tools used in the maintenance of water mains, laterals, valves, and hydrants; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumps, electrical motors and controls, and other equipment used in water and wastewater pumping and treatment; working knowledge of the practices, procedures, materials and tools of the carpentry, electrical, and plumbing trades; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to follow complex written and oral instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Six (6) years of full-time, paid experience in water or wastewater activities, including building maintenance experience;
  2. OR
  3. Any equivalent combination of training and experience indicating ability to perform the duties of the job.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
Possession of a valid CDL Class B NYS Driver’s License;

Possession of a valid NYS Class D Water Operators Certificate.
