Sign Maintenance Worker

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  Under the general direction of the Sign Maintenance Mechanic, performs duties involving the construction, erection, and maintenance of traffic control signs.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Lays out, letters, constructs, paints, and installs traffic signs and other devices;
Operates a paint-marking machine in painting lines separating traffic lanes, and other lines and markings used for traffic control;
Repairs damaged signs and appurtenances;
Assists in keeping inventory of signs and other materials;
Places county emblems, and identifying letters and numbers on new equipment;
During periods when sign-maintenance work load is light, may be assigned to other maintenance activities of the Department.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Working knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology, of the trade; working knowledge of the sections of the State Traffic Manual pertaining to highway signs and street markings; ability to follow oral and written instructions; manual dexterity.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee constantly is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Possession of a high school diploma, or an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating the ability to do the job.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license.
