Stock Clerk

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves responsibility for the maintenance of a central store room.  Depending on the location, the stock handled may very, but generally includes a variety of custodial and office supplies and equipment necessary for the day-to-day operation of a medium-size institution, in addition to inventories which pertain to the mission of a particular agency.  The incumbent is responsible for application of proper stock-keeping methods, and for the maintenance of accurate and complete records.  The work is performed under general supervision, in accordance with established policies and procedures, allowing some leeway for carrying out the details of the work.  Direction may be exercised over the work of one or two other workers, particularly in the dispensing of supplies, but supervision is not usually an important function of this title.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Receives, stores, and issues materials, supplies, and small equipment;
Maintains inventory of stock on hand, and prepares requisitions for replenishment;
Audits purveyor’s invoices, to determine validity of charges;
Checks quantity and quality of stocks received against purchase orders or requisitions, to insure conformity to orders or specifications;
Develops efficient stores methods, in allocation of proper bins or storage place  assignments;
Maintains a variety of control records for supplies received and issued, and make reports as required;
Prepares and packs goods for shipping or delivery;
Distributes materials to work stations in the agency;
Assists staff members in annual supply requisition preparation;
Performs a variety of related clerical, stock-keeping, and routine building cleaning tasks.
Maintains controls and records on personal laundry and related linen supplies and provides interface services between the agency and private contractors;
Assists in budget preparation for the facility linen contract;
Maintains and adjusts linen stocks, as needed.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of methods and practices used in receiving, storing, maintaining, and issuing supplies and equipment; working knowledge of inventory record keeping; ability to organize one's work, and to carry out duties with a minimum of supervision; ability to write legibly; ability to keep simple records; ability to get along well with others; reliability; orderliness.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is required to walk, talk and hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Dept. of Education and one year of full-time, paid experience in the keeping of stocks, supplies, and related records; or any equivalent combination of training and experience indicating the ability to perform the duties of the job.
