DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves the responsibility for the safety of children and adults who are using public wading or swimming facilities. The incumbent shall be at pool side/water side, providing direct supervision of swimming patrons. Direct supervision is exercised over lifeguards. Receives direct supervision from pool or program supervisory staff. Does related work, as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Saves lives and administers CPR, as necessary;
Maintains order and enforces rules of safe conduct;
Renders basic first aid;
Inspects equipment;
Keeps records of attendance;
Assists swimming instructor, within parameters determined by lifeguard certification;
Supervises other lifeguards.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the techniques of life saving and rescue work as applied to accidents in the water; ability to swim well; ability to deal well with both children and adults; good visual and auditory observation skills, mental alertness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age of 18 years upon appointment, AND two (2) seasons of lifeguard experience, AND possession of an appropriate lifeguard certificate and CPR Basic Life Support for Professional Rescuer certificate or its equivalent.
