Swimming Instructor

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This work involves the responsibility of conducting programs of instruction for swimming.  The incumbent plans and instructs recognized swimming and/or lifesaving programs that lead to a certificate of completion. Lifeguard duties are not generally assigned, but may be if incumbent possesses appropriate certifications.  Receives direct supervision from pool, swimming or program supervisory staff.  Supervision may be exercised over lifeguards who are assisting with the instruction.  Does related tasks, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Plans and conducts beginning, intermediate and advanced swimming classes;
Plans and conducts junior and senior lifesaving courses;
Administers CPR;
Renders basic first aid;
Maintains order and enforces rules of safe conduct;
May organize and conduct recreational games and special events;
Keeps records of attendance, activities and equipment;
May perform lifeguard duties.

The above examples of duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work to be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the methods and techniques of individual and group instruction used in aquatic recreational activities; good knowledge of and CPR knowledge and familiarity with water sports and games; ability to deal well with both children and adults; good visual and auditory observation skills; mental alertness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Possession of Water Safety Instructor certificate.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  If required by appointing authority, possession of Lifeguard Training certificate.
