Transportation Assistant

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves the coordination of various aspects of the Office for the Aging transportation program.  The duties involve assisting seniors in seeking access to appropriate transportation.  Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Office for the Aging or his/her designee.  Supervision may be exercised over drivers.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Provide information, referral and assistance to seniors seeking transportation to help them access appropriate transportation services, including advocating when there are individual needs or problems: accompany first time clients, or a group of seniors on a transportation trip, when necessary, to ease the anxiety of accessing new transportation services;
Develop new transportation services or alternatives where there are identified unmet needs.  This may include coordinating, arranging meetings and holding discussions with area school districts, pharmacies, grocery stores, churches or other involved parties to collaboratively set up new modes of service delivery;
Develop and implement an advertising campaign to promote and publicize the transportation services available within Genesee County;
Arrange for advertising with local newspapers, penny savers, radio and cable TV;
Inform seniors and County residents about the new transportation services by continual publicity promotions such as public service announcements, articles in the Office for the Aging newsletter or other appropriate newsletter, letters to senior groups and organizations, contacts with public and community agency representatives, and personal contacts with seniors;
Develop and circulate a Transportation Services brochure highlighting all transportation services in one readable document;
Complete an assessment and evaluate seniors requesting transportation services to determine appropriate provider given the client’s individual situation and services available;
Plan and implement outreach efforts to continually promote and connect individuals in the community who need transportation to utilize newly created and existing transportation services.  For example, this would include fliers to senior housing complex residents on days of shopping trips from their residence, speaking at senior group meetings and luncheons, etc.;
Collect, record and track statistical data from the newly created and existing transportation to analyze utilization, trends and service adaptations necessary for each.  This information will be forwarded to the Marshall Fund Planning Team for review to evaluate the effectiveness of the program;
Document any unmet need in regards to transportation services to forward to the Office for the Aging and the Marshall Fund Planning Team for possible future service development;
May provide information and assistance for senior regarding volunteer opportunities and program operations for RSVP, focused primarily on, but not limited to, intergenerational volunteer programming;

Promotes and markets the RSVP to senior and the community to inform them of volunteer opportunities available through RSVP, focused primarily on, but not limited to, intergenerational volunteer programming.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the geography of the area; good knowledge of characteristics, needs and concerns of older people; working knowledge of community services, especially transportation services; working knowledge of public information and relations techniques; ability to organize, communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, AND EITHER:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field;
    OR:
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Human Services or related field AND two (2) years of full-time, paid experience working with the elderly,
    OR:
  3. Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 62 semester credit hours which includes a minimum of 15 credit hours in Human Services or related field at a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university, AND two (2) years of full-time, paid experience working with the elderly.
    OR:
  4. Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of 1, 2, or 3 above.

NOTE: Part-time and volunteer experience will be prorated.
