Typist

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work is primarily routine in nature and involves the performance of standardized typing and clerical tasks.  Although detailed instructions are given for new and difficult assignments, the work is ordinarily repetitive in nature and is performed according to established procedures.  Employees in this class may be assigned to work on word processing equipment to produce acceptable copy by manipulating an alphanumeric keyboard and reviewing information on a display screen.  The amount of time spent on this type of equipment depends upon the operator’s capability and the job requirements for its efficient operation.  An employee in this class may be required to undergo training to develop and/or increase skills in the operation of word processing equipment.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Types correspondence, payrolls, form letters, requisitions, reports, and other material;
Maintains a variety of control and record systems, makes entries from original sources;
Operates a variety of simple office machines, such as duplicators and photo copy machines;
Opens, sorts, and distributes mail;
Answers telephone, relays messages, gives information to the public, and acts as receptionist in an office;
Pulls material from files, makes simple file searches;
Makes arithmetical computations, compiles and types simple statistical reports;
Types, issues and records applications, licenses and permits;
Operates a switchboard, public address system;
Receives and disburses petty cash.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; working knowledge of arithmetic and english; ability to type accurately at an acceptable rate of speed; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; ability to write legibly; clerical aptitude; mental alertness; neatness; accuracy; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Graduation from a standard Senior High School or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, including or supplemented by two (2) semesters of typing;
    OR:

  2. Any equivalent combination of training and experience indicating the  ability to perform the duties of the job.


SPECIAL NOTE: Applicants seeking employment in this position may be required to provide verifiable training and experience in the operation of word processing equipment to receive an appointment to a position where such skills are a prerequisite to the satisfactory performance of the work.
