Vocational Coordinator

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Vocational Coordinator works with a certified teacher and school counselor to help at risk students identify their aptitudes and obtain employment or enter college or the military.  The Vocational Coordinator establishes collaborations with the One-Stop Center and private sector employers.  The Vocational Coordinator works with the One Stop Center to screen potential participants for eligibility, according to the guidelines the One Stop Center follows, and to identify employment, internship, and job shadowing opportunities for students, as well as summer employment opportunities.  The Vocational Coordinator will work closely with the Alternative High School Equivalency Preparation Program (AHSEPP) teacher and counselor in a holistic approach, to ensure that all of the students needs are being identified and addressed, to maximize his or her potential.  This work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Learning.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Identify clients in need of Vocational Case Management Services;
Enroll students in courses and seminars that teach leadership and teamwork skills;
Assist the teacher and counselor to identify and provide supportive services as needed to help each student obtain and retain a job, such as the completion of employment applications, writing of resumes, proper dress and behavior for employment interviews and work situations, interviewing skills and techniques, teamwork, and conflict resolution;
Arrange for and accompany students on field trips to local businesses;
Provide guidance in conducting Internet research on colleges, career information, and available jobs;
Assist certificated staff in the provision of supportive services to students and their families as necessary;
Mentor students during job experiences;
Serve as a liaison/mediator between the employer and the student as needed;
Assist existing staff to provide comprehensive guidance and career counseling to students, in cooperation with the counseling services AHSEPP currently provides.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of the evaluation of students' vocational interests and aptitudes; working knowledge of sources of job placement; knowledge of training and educational programs sponsored by the Employment and Training Agency; knowledge of Federal, State, and Local Employment and Training Rules and Regulations and the ability to apply the knowledge in the performance of the duties of the position; ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with students, employers, and training agencies; ability to assist with the provision of employment counseling; ability to provide instruction regarding interviewing practices and techniques; ability to prepare, as well as interpret, narrative and tabular reports; ability to communicate effectively orally; ability to relate well and deal confidently with children of all ages; ability to create interactive relationships with area businesses; tact and courtesy; integrity; good judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from a high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education; AND:

  1. Completion of a minimum of 30 semester credit hours in a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university in education or a related area;
    OR:
  2. one year of full time paid work experience in education, job development, personnel counseling, or placement in an Employment and Training, community action, or similar agency dealing with the employment and training of economically disadvantaged, minority, handicapped, or low income persons;
    OR;
  3. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (1) and (2).
