Water System Operator

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is semi-skilled, manual work involving the performance of installation tasks on water mains, hydrants and meters.  Complex work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Town Supervisor while routine tasks may be performed under general supervision and inspected upon completion.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs meter readings;
Performs meter and remote installation;
Provides maintenance to hydrants which includes yearly flow test, yearly preventative     maintenance, marker installation and painting as necessary;
Locates water lines as requested by UFPO;
Performs line valve exercising;
Periodically flushes lines to maintain water quality;
Collects monthly bacteria samples;
Monitors for system chlorine residual;
Collects non-routine water samples as directed by the Health Department;
Inspects new water service lines and system connections;

Responds to customer complaints (e.g. low water pressure, dirty water, aesthetic           concerns, etc.).

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of practices, terminology, and tools used in the maintenance of water mains, valves and hydrants; working knowledge of installation and repair of water flow meters; ability to communicate effectively; dependability; resourcefulness; initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Department of Education, and possession of a current Public Water System Operator certification.
