Water Treatment Plant Operator Type B Plant

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:This work involves responsibility  during a shift for the efficient operation and maintenance of a Type B water Treatment Plant without facilities for filtration and involving application of chemicals to the water, such as, chlorine or chlorine compounds, chlorine-dioxide, chlorine-ammonia, fluoride compounds, or the process of dechlorination.  The work is performed under general supervision of an operator qualified to be in charge of the operation of the plant.  Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees in the performance of their assigned duties.  The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK CTIVITIES:
Operates pumps, valves, motors, and related machinery and equipment;
Performs maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment;
Records readings of meters, gauges and scales;
Regulates and adjusts chlorinators;
Takes samples of water and makes necessary tests for control of plant operation;
Assists in the instruction of trainees;
Supervises the work of laborers and other subordinates employees;
Keeps a log of plant operations and related records;
Performs custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a Type B Plant without facilities for filtration and for the application of chemicals to the water, such as, chlorine or chlorine compounds, chlorine-dioxide, chlorine-ammonia, fluoride compounds, or the process of dechlorination; working knowledge of the principles and application of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water purification; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability  to read, understand and record date from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operations; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction; mechanical aptitude; alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Type B Plant without facilities for filtration which treats over 2.5 million gallons per day: Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma, successful completions of an appropriate level water Treatment Operator course of instruction approved by the State Department of Health, and one year of acceptable operating experience at a water treatment plant with a level of complexity equivalent to a Grade II-B facility or higher.
  2. Type B Plant without facilities for filtration which treats 2.5 miller gallons per day or less and serves more than 1,000 people: Successful completion of an appropriate level Water Treatment Operator course of instruction approved by the State Department of health and six months of acceptable operating experience at a water treatment plant.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:

  1. Type B Plant without facilities for filtration which treats over 2.5 miller gallons per day: Eligibility for a Grade II-B Water Treatment Operator certificate issued under the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code at time of application. Possession of the certificate at time of appointment.
  2. Type B Plant without facilities for filtration which treats 2.5 million gallons per day or less and serves more than 1,000 people: Eligibility for a Grade C Water Treatment Operator certificate issued under the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code at time of application.  Possession of the certificate at time of appointment.
