Welder

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work, involving responsibility for the efficient performance of a variety of welding and cutting tasks.  The work is performed under general supervision of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in the performance of assignments.  Employee may occasionally be required to perform equipment operation or automotive mechanic duties during short periods due to an emergency or lack of welding work.  Does related duties, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Welds bumpers, fenders, gear casings, castings, etc.;
Reinforces weak spots in machinery and apparatus;
Builds up work shafting, teeth, sprockets and other machine parts;
Welds chains and reinforcement steel for concrete bridges;
Welds gasoline tanks, platforms, docking, guard rails;
Fabricates and repairs new or used parts and attachments for a variety of equipment;
Uses equipment for cutting procedures;
Performs occasional tasks as motor equipment operator or automotive mechanic, as assigned.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the common techniques, practices, tools, terminology of welding; thorough knowledge of welding safety procedures;
ability to perform complex welding assignments; ability to work from plans and specifications and oral instructions; manual dexterity.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Four (4) years of experience as a welder, OR any equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate the ability to do the work successfully.
