Working Supervisor

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is routine supervisory work involving responsibility for supervising and participating in the work of a number of maintenance workers, motor equipment operators, and laborers in the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled work on public works projects.  An employee in this class follows well-established routines and procedures, but may make decisions as to order of tasks and the details of the methods to be used.  Supervision of incumbent is by the Superintendent of Highways.  Does related work, as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises and participates in the laying and repairing of storm and sanitary wastewater lines;
Leads in the inspection and cleaning of storm and sanitary wastewater lines;
Supervises and participates in the operation of trucks, rollers, loaders, backhoes, and other public works equipment;
Performs and supervises a variety of general public works activities as assigned such as snow plowing, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs, road patching, park maintenance and curb replacement;
Instructs subordinates in the operation of various types of equipment, and in proper methods of doing the work;
Supervises and participates in the keeping of simple records regarding time worked, projects completed, and motor vehicle assignments.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the practices, tools, terminology, and equipment used in general public works activities; good knowledge of the geography of the locale with reference to the location of streets, sidewalks, and storm and sanitary wastewater lines; ability to skillfully operate various types of motor equipment; such as, trucks, snow plows, loaders, rollers, backhoes and sweepers; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to supervise the work of others; dependability; ability to work under all types of weather conditions; excellent physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two (2) years of experience in public works activities involving the performance of semi-skilled or skilled work and completion of a standard grade school.
