`In time of need’, the Funeral Home contacts the National Scheduling Office(NSO) in St. Louis, MO, phone number 1-800-535-1117, and tells them it is a pre-need case.
All the pre-need letter does is let the Veteran and Surviving Spouse know if they died the day that letter is dated, they are eligible.
Of course they could lose their eligibility if they commit a capital crime, or if Congress changes the laws.
On the flipside, pre-need applicants that are not eligible today might be eligible in the future if Congress changes the law.
Pre-need does not guarantee burial in any specific National Cemetery and it does not reserve a space in any particular National Cemetery. It just lets them know that if they died the day they did the pre-need, they would be eligible. It’s just for peace of mind.
The National Cemetery Administration is a “time-of-need” service and will take good care of both the Veteran and Surviving Spouse when the time comes.
