STAFF PSYCHOLOGIST (Community Mental Health)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a professional level position that provides services related to the psychological aspects of the community mental health/mental retardation and alcohol and substance abuse programs including but not limited to the selection, administration, scoring and interpretation of appropriate tests. Emphasis is placed on the integrated team approach. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Director of Clinical Services. Duties may include the supervision and training of professional staff. Does related duties, as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Performs psychological evaluation for diagnostic purposes using appropriate testing devices and writes psychological reports; Conducts individual, group, and family therapy sessions; Assists in the intake, screening, and diagnostic activities of the department; Participates in staff consultation for diagnosis and recommendation of treatment for patients; Writes psychological reports, case studies and maintains clinical records and related correspondence; Advances the community mental health program by disseminating information through education and community organizations; The above examples of duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of psychological tests and measurements; thorough knowledge of personality development and maladjustment and deficiencies; a thorough knowledge of the terminology in the field; the ability to analyze and evaluate psychological test results; the ability to work effectively with professional associates; and tact in dealing with patients and their families.
A doctoral degree in psychology from a university recognized by the New York State Department of Education, or otherwise eligible for a NYS license as a psychologist. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT: Currently licensed or have a limited permit as a psychologist by the NYS Department of Education.
